Run With The Hunted Everything Familiar REFx09 | CD LISTEN - (why .ogg?) Of Course It's Dark... It's A Suicide Note

I’ve wrote a review for Run with the Hunted’s amazing “Destroy all Calendars” a while back. However, Refoundation Records recently released “destroy all calendars” together with Run with the Hunted’s debut EP entitled “find your way out” under the name “everything familiar”. Therefore, I’ve decided to post the old review again and add some words about the debut ep below.

Run with the Hunted come from Phoenix, Arizona, a state not really known for its blooming hardcore scene. So, whether this is of advantage for a new band is unclear. Anyways there are some good bands emerging from that scene and with more bands with the qualities of Run with the Hunted, Arizona is to be watched.

“Destroy all calendars” is the second EP they are releasing after the one entitled “Find your way out”. And as I knew some of the old songs it is safe to say that run with the hunted have really made a step forward.


The first song “stepping on cracks”, which is basically about human relationships, gives the direction for the record: Straight ahead, always pushing forward and you can already hear one of the strengths of that band. Singer Drew knows how to use his voice and unlike other singers he’s capable of changing the way he sings and thus creates a lot of variation in the songs.


How the next song “Of course it’s dark, it’s a suicide note” works is written right there in the lyrics: “So why help build it up, when we can tear it all down?” That is exactly what they are doing here; they build the song up to reach a climax and then in the last seconds they literally tear it all down again with sheer energy.


“Time and Pressure” then again shows the variability of the band, it starts fast, changes pace, becomes almost spoken word and then starts up again. This song, as all the other songs, is very political but it’s not too obviously, no used-up phrases, but hidden messages behind imagery. You really have to listen to what they are saying and read the provided explanations to get the deeper meaning of the songs.


The title track then is the worthy endpoint of the EP. It starts out with this amazing drums (another strength of the record) the shimmering guitar melody creates a gloomy atmosphere and it all builds up to the final “I don’t want to be a part of it another fucking day”. What else is there to say?


So to sum up: If you should ever need a soundtrack to let your anger or frustration out, music to jump around in your room, or sing along while driving through the countryside, run with the hunted’s “destroy all calendars” is the perfect record.


As you might get from what I wrote above, “destroy all calendars” is an amazing record. If one had known their debut EP “find your way out” one could have expected that something amazing was about to come upon us. The old songs which can be found alongside “destroy all calendars” on “everything familiar” already show the potential of the band. You have Drew’s variable voice, combined with his even more desperate lyrics (“For the life of me I can't understand why I do this to you all. Why I do this to myself. And I wake up everyday wondering (does it really have to be like this?”). You have the powerful, making–you-want-to-scream choruses (“gone but never forgotten”) and the overall pure energy in every song… Ok, the songs aren’t as good as “destroy all calendars”, the song structures aren’t that special or sophisticated yet and you can see that the gained experience has helped with the songwriting of the new songs, but still, the old ones are better than what many other bands produce in their lifetime. So, all the better that Refoundation has decided to make the songs more easily available in Europe too…


Before listening to Run With The Hunted’s Everything Familiar album I wasn't really sure what to expect, but after the first couple of songs I was definitely paying close attention. At first glance, Run With The Hunted appears as nothing more than another band doing the hardcore/metal crossover. However, the more I listen to this CD, the more it’s becoming apparent to me that there’s more to this record.
The band was started in late 2006 in Phoenix, Arizona and after two albums released by American labels, they decided it’s time to give European kids the chance to hear what they got to say. Everything Familiar was released by hard working folks from Refoundation Records and comprises all the stuff recorded by the band and previously released only in USA. What you can expect is politically and socially driven hardcore with lots of tempo changes, metallic riffing and vocals ranging from spoken words to scream to typical hardcore shouting. The album can be divided into two parts showcasing the band in their first recordings dating back to 2007, and their most recent stuff recorded in 2008 and released as a 4 track ep on Glory Kids Records. While their earlier work is a typical, nothing above average new school hardcore with a strong metal touch to it, the newest song are more complex and aggressive and overall better. The band is doing a great job creating a sound that incorporates both hardcore and metal with some punk touch from time to time. The band shows its highest potential when they get aggressive and metal, while the “I hate myself” emo parts that rears up from time to time are totally not cool. Luckily, the weak parts are few and far between. I think the greatest thing about this band is their energy displayed in high powered, fast paced parts of the album and they should stick to it.
If you’re an avid Hope Conspiracy, Indecision or Shai Hulud fan, this is something you need to pick up. With lots of skills in the music and a solid production, Run With The Hunted provides you with a powerful album.


If you are familiar with Run With The Hunted you might already know the songs from Everything Familiar (talking about choosing a suitable title). As the songs on this record come from the earlier releases Destroy All Calendars and Find Your Way Out. The latter was released in 2007 and the former in March of this year. So it might be odd to re-release these songs already. Throughout Everything Familiar I get this nostalgic 90’s feel, at times you get some metalcore influenced parts that remind me of Skycamefalling or Shai Hulud. But a band like The Hope Conspiracy is never far away either. As a last reference I would like to name Modern Life Is War as a good one. Run With The Hunted has a similar passionate way of playing their music and screaming out their words. The songs have this agitating feel and the content of the lyrics doesn’t make you happy either, even more, they give you some food for thought. It’s mostly fast paced stuff except for Excuse Me, Do These Effectively Hide My Thunder. That song has a more epic feel to it and contains some clean vocals as well. (3,5/5)




Post von Refoundation aus Italien ist immer gut. Das kleine Label hat einige interessante Bands im Gepäck und verfolgt eine löbliche Philosophie. So betont man im Booklet der Platte deutlich, dass man keine finanziellen Interessen hat, sondern viel eher Ideale wie Frieden, Gerechtigkeit und Respekt verinnerlichen will.

So verfügt das Label über eine ordentliche Anzahl von Bands wie THE GUILT SHOW oder ALONE und bringt in regelmäßigen Abständen Posi-HC Platten auf den Markt, die hierzulande beispielsweise über Let It Burn Records oder Blacktop Records vertrieben werden. So spart man teure Importkosten und unterstützt zudem nicht nur ein gutes Label.

Kommen wir aber zur Musik. Mit RUN WITH THE HUNTED liegt nun die nächste Band vor, die ihr bereits drittes Album veröffentlicht und erstklassig an Helden des Genres wie THE HOPE CONSPIRACY oder SHAI HULUD erinnert und von innerer Zerrissenheit nur so strotzt. So sagen Titel wie „I’ve Made A Huge Mistake“ oder „Destroy All Calendars“ eigentlich schon alles und machen jede Erklärung überflüssig. Dass man hier zwischen schnellem- und schleppendem HC pendelt, legt eine erfrischende Abwechslung zutage und unterstreicht erneut die Qualität des italienischen Labels. Austesten. (7/10)


Run With The Hunted aus Pheonix, Arizona mögen zwar eine junge Band sein, klingen aber gar nicht so. Auf dieser Zusammenstellung bisheriger Werke, als erstem Release in Europa, drücken irgendwie die 90er durch, zusammen aber mit der rockigen Wut jüngerer und geschmackssicherer Hardcore-Bands. Dunkel, mitreissend und voller Politik.

Diese ist wohl in jüngerer Zeit ein wenig zu fest in Vergessenheit gegangen, wo mehr fröhlicher Lokalpatriotismus und Hurra-Miteinander regieren. Analog zu den 90er-Helden ist in den Texten dieser frischen Band viel von der immer seltener werdenden politischen Radikalität, welche Hardcore halt auch beinhalten soll, zu finden. Gut so! Dazu diese intensive Mischung zwischen verzweifeltem Hardcore und zerschmetterndem Metal, die immer noch vorzüglich funktioniert, man denke nur an die tollen schweizerischen Unveil. Hier sind es aber mehr die Sperrigkeit von The Suicide File, die Melodik und Vertracktheit von Indecision oder – vor allem – der nihilistische Punch von The Hope Conspiracy, die Einfluss lieferten. So hoffnungslos sind sie aber denn nicht, denn diese Mid-Tempo-Suppe sprüht nur so von Agressivität und Energie. Als Beilage gibts dazu jede Menge Crewshouts, Moshparts und toller Melodien.

Wenn es so etwas wie ein 90er-Revival gibt, dann ist das toll, mit solchen Bands als Speerspitze. Und seine Berechtigung hat es sicher nach dieser Youth Crew-Welle sicher. Diese Zusammenstellung lohnt sich definitiv und das ganz sicher nicht nur wegen ein paar Vergleichsbands, Run With The Hunted haben etwas eigenes und bringen viel frischen Wind.

Refoundation spendet übrigens pro verkauftem Album einen Oiro an einen guten Zweck (Tierrechte, Earth Liberation, ...). Also, los!





L'Arizona non è sicuramente una delle culle più fertili dell'hardcore, eppure ogni tanto è in grado di sfornare gruppi di un certo spessore, come questi Run With The Hunted.
Il disco in questione, pubblicato dall'italiana Refoundation, è un CD contenente brani tratti da precedenti lavori, racchiusi in una raccolta che ha in se tutto il potenziale per far conoscere meglio e più diffusamente il gruppo americano in Europa. Nonostante le registrazioni provengano da differenti sessioni, il tutto suona decisamente compatto, tutto d'un pezzo, facendo scorrere la tracklist liscia e spedita, brano dopo brano.
Il suono dei RWTH è profanamente parlando un mix di hardcore e metal, che, scavando sotto la prima scorza, si rivela essere un'accurata commistione di spunti e riferimenti già collaudati, ma reinterpretati con una discreta dose di personalità.
Si possono apprezzare passaggi degni dei migliori Shai Hulud, temperati però dalla potenza hardcore di vari gruppi anni '90 (Trial su tutti, ma anche Strife), riuscendo ad amalgamare tutto con inserimenti decisamente propri, caratteristici, dando una connotazione unica ai brani e alla loro interpretazione.
Nelle liriche i RWTH risultano personali, ma leggendo attentamente notiamo che si incaricano di certe tematiche, impregnando i propri scritti di critica e concetti diffusamente politici e sociali, apportando spunti di riflessione al di fuori della retorica. Una visione personale ma non intimista trasuda dai testi, che si sposano al meglio con i suoni.
Un piccolo dettaglio, su tutti, mi ha colpito: il respiro, il rifiatare del cantante tra un fraseggio e l'altro, conferisce un senso di immediatezza che, non so se fosse voluto o meno, nessun artificio avrebbe potuto produrre.
Questi ragazzi stanno crescendo sempre di più e non immeritatamente: presto saranno in tour in Europa e aspettano solo di vederci tutti cantare queste ottime canzoni con loro, procacciatevi questo disco, i RWTH sono uno di quei gruppi americani che merita la vostra attenzione, a differenza di tante schifezze che oggi gli States sfornano nell'hardcore (...e non solo!).


E’ un album hardcore ben suonato, onesto, sincero. I Run with the hunted trovano nelle nove tracce che compongono questo Everything Familiar quell’hardcore che sempre più difficilmente appare in una scena spesso confusa con la moda dei tatuaggi...
La Refoundation Records ( Dead Vows,Alone, Anchor, the Guilt Show) è maestra nel riconoscere la qualità di un buon lavoro, politicamente impegnato, magistralmente suonato, in poche parole vero.
I pezzi scorrono veloci, come accade spesso per i dischi hardcore, ma ogni pezzo lascia un segno e a fare in modo che questo avvenga sono i testi, le liriche, che sempre più spesso ( purtroppo) vengono trascurati sommersi da migliaia di bpm e schitarrate furiose che non arriveranno mai da nessuna parte.
Non mancano le ritmiche potenti, le chitarre distorte, la furia e l’immediatezza necessarie al genere ma quello degli americani Run with the hunted è un hardcore che mostra delle curiose costruzioni musicali (per il genere) con particolari armonizzazioni di voci, I’ve made a huge mistake, e melodie che si discostano a tratti dall’hardcore più canonico, Excuse me do this effectively hide my thunder (nell’intro in particolar modo), rendendo questo disco facilmente apprezzabile anche dai meno affezionati al genere a patto che condividano pienamente la politica cantata con forza e passione in ognuno dei brani che va’ a comporre questo disco: lotta contro una civiltà moderna che sembra soffocare l’individuo, contro un sistema oppressivo che schiaccia gli interessi dei singoli, di questo parla Everything Familiar e per questo motivo bisognerebbe correre ad acquistarlo e ascoltarlo con attenzione, riflettendo. Direttamente da Phoenix, Arizona, apocalittici come la bomba di Hiroshima, mi piombano addosso i Run With The Hunted. In linea con il trend degli ultimi anni, i cinque americani suonano un hardcore simile a quello degli ultimi Shai Hulud, seppure con qualche apertura melodica in più.

Il batterista, che con mio sommo gaudio fa un uso piuttosto sporadico e moderato del doppio pedale, pesta dall’inizio alla fine, schiaffeggiando a più non posso i crash e impegnandosi in continui ed incessanti cambi di tempo; le chitarre alzano un muro invalicabile dilatando il suono, durante i fraseggi più lenti, a suon di accordi “ottavati” (aka “veri”), per poi riprendere a martellare con i palm muting come nella migliore tradizione metal core… il tutto, come da copione, è supportato da una voce urlata oltre il limite del possibile che, con buona frequenza, viene rimpolpata da cori secchi e del tutto efficaci nel rinforzare l’incisività dei pezzi.

La tracklist si rivela strategicamente azzeccatissima con “Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?” a rallentare parzialmente una cavalcata sino ad allora incessante, per poi lasciare spazio alle ultime due sfuriate!

Un disco dirompente, consigliatissimo ai più giovani (io, chiaramente, me ne tiro fuori!). (80/100)


Everything Familiar raccoglie il materiale registrato dai Run With The Hunted (originari di Phoenix, Arizona) dal 2006, anno di nascita della band, ad oggi.
La formazione vuole così presentare al pubblico europeo il proprio repertorio, una miscela di hardcore moderno ma saldamente legato alla scena di provenienza, soprattutto a quanto espresso negli anni Novanta, con il rallentamento dei tempi e l’aggiunta di elementi metal in seno alla formula originale. I Run With The Hunted offrono agli ascoltatori un hardcore ricco di contaminazioni ma mai cafone, dal forte impatto emotivo, eppure capace di filtrare la propria attitudine alla luce di una sensibilità tipicamente post e desiderosa di percorrere nuovi sentieri. Tale processo compositivo porta alla creazione di brani che fondono al loro interno spunti vincenti, come i suoni di chitarra al contempo taglienti e dilatati o le vocals sofferte e sentite, ma che non riescono mai del tutto a staccarsi dalle proprie influenze. Nonostante le buone potenzialità, ai Run With The Hunted manca ancora la capacità di compiere il salto di qualità decisivo, così da lasciarsi definitivamente alle spalle paragoni ingombranti e puntare dritti alla creazione di un linguaggio personale. Lungo il lavoro si nota un progressivo avvicinamento all’obiettivo e la formazione dimostra di avere le risorse per superare i limiti di cui sopra, soprattutto riesce comunque a catturare l’attenzione e a farsi apprezzare per la scrittura dinamica e ricca di spunti differenti. Al momento, siamo pertanto al cospetto di un buon lavoro di genere, capace di fotografare lo status di una formazione interessante e tesa nella ricerca di una propria cifra stilistica, autrice di anthem ricchi di pathos e forte di liriche mai banali, figlia della seconda ondata hardcore di cui rappresenta un’evoluzione in fieri. Starà alla prossima prova in studio offrire la risposta definitiva sulle reali potenzialità dei Run With The Hunted, cui alla luce di questa raccolta è lecito chiedere il classico sforzo in più.

Prima band americana in casa Refoundation Records, e il sound aggressivo non manca. I Run With The Hunted arrivano da Phoenix, Arizona, dove dopo vari side project, la band decide di unirsi per gridare le proprie idee politiche e di denuncia su tematiche come la difesa della terra e degli animali. La causa ambientalista è sicuramente uno dei motori che spinge la nostrana Refoundation Records a produrre band di questo tipo e parte dei ricavati vengono investiti proprio nel finanziamento di associazioni che si occupano di questi problemi.

I Run With The Hunted offrono un sound deciso in nove tracce che abbracciano stili di band quali ndecision, Shai Hulud e The Hope Conspiracy. Ottimo lo screaming e i frenetici cambi di ritmo che offrono anche spunti melodici utili a smorzare i toni tra un brano e l’altro. “Everything familiar” è un album già maturo nonostante la giovane età dei componenti della band che fanno tesoro delle loro esperienze precedenti e si impongono come una nuova interessante realtà del panorama internazionale.

Ma porca miseria. Ogni volta mi riprometto, anche a seguito dei rimproveri della Redazione, di moderare i voti agli album hardcore underground, specie quelli della Refoundation Records, ma con dischi simili a questo "Everything Familiar" dei Run With The Hunted come si fa? Maledizione! Ci si trova infatti di fronte a un album di eccezionale valore: uniti all'impegno sociale e politico, che sempre contraddistingue le produzioni della Refoundation, vi sono un notevole livello tecnico ma soprattutto una carica di passione e un'energia eccezionali e assolutamente distintive nell'hardcore di questi Run With The Hunted. Le influenze dichiarate in biografia sono a una serie eterogenea e ampia di bands, quali Indecision, The Hope Conspiracy, Trial, Shai Hulud e The Suicide File. L'amalgama che ne scaturisce è assolutamente sincero, convincente e originale, tra melodia, stacchi mid tempos e un singer decisamente sugli scudi. I Run With The Hunted, americani di Phoenix (Arizona), costituitisi nel 2006, sono al loro terzo album, il primo ad essere distribuito in Europa, che li vedrà in tour a cavallo del 2010. Dunque sappiate che questo "Everything Familiar" dei Run With The Hunted vale più del voto ricevuto. Un altro gioiello nascosto dall'ingombrante ombra del mercato discografico, che tuttavia contribuisce così a renderlo in qualche modo ancora più prezioso anzi, inestimabile.


La Refoundation Records, label tutta italiana nata con lo spirito giusto di riportare l’hardcore in Italia a livelli considerevoli, sapendo scegliere accuratamente le band del suo roster per carica emotiva e lealtà civica e morale, ci presenta i Run With The Hunted. La band è la prima americana di casa Refoundation, che sta a sottolineare il grande lavoro che sta facendo questa label per dare voce a gruppi impegnati sul fronte umanitario, animale e politico. Tra questi gruppi rientrano a pieno titolo i Run With The Hunted.

La band proveniente da Phoenix, Arizona, nasce nel 2006 dopo vari sideproject dei rispettivi membri. Il gruppo nasce dall’esigenza di offrire un onesto e sincero contributo musicale, e per dare adito a quelle che sono le tematiche che i membri sentono più vicine a loro. Nei loro testi affiorano pensieri legati al problema di riportare una visione della politica più radicale, attenta ai problemi dell’uomo, dell’animale e della terra, assoggettata da una società che quotidianamente produce un sistema ossessivo ed oppressivo. Le nove tracce di questo “Everything Familiar” ricordano gruppi che per primi hanno cercato di portare all’attenzione dei fan i problemi sopra citati. Tra Indecision, Shai Hulud e The Hope Conspiracy, i RWTH sono riusciti a dare un’evoluzione completa sia nel cantato, con frequenti scream legati assieme a parti vocali parlate, sia nella stesura dei testi. L’approccio musicale rimane sempre ad alti livelli in cui i membri del gruppo possono spaziare tra pezzi breakdown, molta melodia, e parti midtempo con controtempi ben riusciti, senza dimenticare qualche sfuriata in classico stile hardcore, pratiche già adottate nei precedenti due album.

Pezzi come Of Course It's Dark...Its A Suicide Note, Times And Pressures, la bellissima Destroy All Calendars possono rendervi l’idea di quanto potenti e completi siano i Run With The Hunted, ma per apprezzarli in pieno dovrete munirvi dell’album e perdervi dentro voi stessi.



Sbarcano da Phoenix, Arizona, dopo due dischi stampati negli Usa, i Run With The Hunted, quintetto che approda su Refoundation, label nostrana che ancora una volta mostra la sua vocazione di etichetta interessata principalmente a contenuti ed attitudine piuttosto che ad un tipo di suono specifico. In questo caso, l'album dal titolo "Everything familiar" raccoglie tutto quanto prodotto finora dalla band, che fin dal primo ascolto mi ha fortemente riportato indietro ad un periodo in cui il logo Equal Vision sui dischi hardcore era sinonimo di qualità ed i gruppi che la label produceva spaccavano il mondo ed erano considerati da molti il meglio di quanto uscisse fuori nella seconda metà degli anni '90: parlo di Hope Conspiracy principalmente, ma anche di Trial ed in parte di gruppi dall'approccio più "classico" e meno mediato come potevano essere i Give Up The Ghost.

Un gruppo che sembra guardare ad un preciso periodo, quindi, ma che mostra comunque di guardare avanti e di essere, per certi versi, ancora al lavoro su una formula più personale. Non fraintendiamoci, gli spunti non derivativi non sono assolutamente in minoranza su questo disco, tuttavia proviamo a sentire di seguito due dei pezzi migliori di questo disco, "Of corse it's dark. It's a suicide note" ed "Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?": voce a parte viene il dubbio di avere quasi a che fare con due band diverse, una debitrice a quanto detto finora, la seconda più simile a un gruppo come i giapponesi FC Five (i due vocalist hanno più di qualche punto in comune). A parte ciò, in ogni caso, il disco fila liscio anche al di là di una certa eterogeneità, merito di un buon lavoro sull'articolazione dei pezzi, dei suoni molto curati e di un riffing che non di rado ricorre ad aperture melodiche che contribuiscono a dare respiro a pezzi che altrimenti sarebbero risultati troppo monotoni, anche per via della durata che si attesta nella maggioranza dei casi oltre i tre minuti. In ogni caso prevale un approccio aggressivo ma non troppo in your face, le velocità non sono quasi mai elevatissime, anzi spesso si va avanti di mid tempo e di quattro quarti, alle volte raddoppiati, alle volte addirittura con doppio pedale in evidenza, come in"Destroy all calendari" che forse rappresenta la migliore sintesi di quanto proposto dal gruppo.

In definitiva un disco che potrà piacere a molti ma non necessariamente imprescindibile. Chi vorrà dare una chance a questi americani potrebbe scoprire un disco che ha il pregio di crescere durante gli ascolti - come molto di quello prodotto da Refoundation devo dire - e che, non ultimo, porta avanti un approccio molto lontano dalla piega priva di contenuti che invade la scena hardcore attuale. Un motivo in più per apprezzarli e supportarli.
